While listening to mase J, we couldn’t refrain from thinking about how fresh and innovative his music is. Perhaps we are not used to his style yet, but the project’s blend of chill-out, lo-fi tones, classic hip-hop and rap really impressed us. The British talent seems to be able to surf freely among genres, borrowing the beat features in each one. Take for instance ‘what’s it to you’, the project’s latest effort: introduced by psych, indie-flavoured guitars, the track soon evolves into a laid-back beat, featuring bouncy, dynamic beats and spacious, airy harmonic matter.
Gearing up for an EP expected later this summer, mase J uses ‘what’s it to you’ as a lead opener, and what an opener. A glorious, relatable gem, the track is the perfect listening experience for the early summer months, while containing a slice of fragility and relatability, courtesy of mase J.
Lyrically, the single seeks to imagine a fictional world lacking honesty and truthfulness (The Truman Show-style), using it as bait to empower the listeners into taking a step back, recognizing their flaws and strengths, and being authentic to themselves and others. As mase J explains: “This song is really about people being reintroduced into my life. What I’ve been to, how my life is going & my current mentality shrouded by a breakup”.
