We last wrote about Martyn Scott earlier this year, celebrating the release of ‘Bearable Through Love’, described by us as “a poignant and nostalgic anthem”. Now, the British musician, singer and songwriter returns with his latest effort, a more nuanced and moody gem navigating the lands between pop and classic rock’n’roll. ‘I Really Do’ is exactly that: channelling a certain melodramatic energy, it brings to mind Mark Knopfler’s melancholic melodies, joined by Beatles-Esque vocal harmonies.
As Scott himself declares: “It sounds like an AI collaboration between The Smiths and The Beatles with Mark Knopfler featuring on the guitar solo”. Martyn’s dedication to the classics must be praised; borrowing a topical element from each of his influences, he then manages to create a piece that celebrates such acts, while being original and unique on its own.
Proud of his retro character, Scott certainly doesn’t hide his passion for tradition. We appreciate it: in a world that’s always running towards the future, it’s nice to meet someone kindly reminding us of what once was. It’s glorious.
