What we love the most about ‘Birthday Wish’ is Martha May’s wholesome, evocative vocals, delivered so effortlessly with controlled nostalgia and light poignancy. It’s almost hypnotising, with the London-based songstress offering the listeners a slice of relatability and potential inspiration. Sonically, it’s all drenched into a contemporary, yet understated pop production, never overpowering May’s charming tone.
Following up from January’s single ‘Distance’, ‘Birthday Wish’ also signals Martha’s return to the music scene, and frankly, it’s obvious that she made a big step up, both in terms of personal artistry and overall sonic quality. Lyrically, the record explores themes of body dysmorphia and internal struggle, with May explaining: “With surface image defining us more than ever, the struggle for body acceptance can be a lonely, endless road.”
