The keen reader might remember Mark Vennis from an article we published last year, praising ‘Small Town Vampire’ as “incredibly charming and quirky”. Well, time has passed, yet the British rocker has retained his rebellious flair and the critical look at its motherland. Reflecting on the state of the nation, Vennis embarks on a witty and honest exploration of the issues and conflicts that make Britain the non-perfect country it is today. Yet, it all comes from a place of deep love, signalling there’s still hope for the future.
Aptly titled ‘Sunrise EP’, the record features five compelling tracks. Sonically, we are in classic rock-pop territories, a field that’s very suitable for Mark’s nostalgic artistic outlook. Among fuzzy guitars and rowdy drums, Vennis layers meaningful and wholesome vocals, here delivered with a certain rowdiness and anger. Packed with tongue-in-cheek social commentary, the EP gives the listeners plenty to reflect on.
Released with Mark’s band Different Place, ‘Sunrise EP’ is a strong record. Speaking about the inspiration behind it, Vennis explains: “This EP was meant to be released on General Election Day, but Sunak beat us to the punch. After 14 long years under the shabbiest Tory government, just maybe there was a spark of light at the end of the tunnel. These songs are about life in modern Britain and about hope that things have to get better.”
