A soft yet intense offering, ‘Scarlette’ feels honest and authentic, a slice of lyrical nuance delivered by the raw, evocative vocals of Australian troubadour Mark Howard. Hailing from the mysterious Philip Island – not far from Melbourne – it is no wonder he’s able to pen such beautiful music. Encastoned in the most stunning nature, Howard connects with his deeper consciousness, finding the right words and notes to navigate the painful territories of love, relationship, and personal reckoning.
Built over an eclectic mix of pop, rock and Americana, ‘Scarlette’ makes ample use of polite guitar tones, clean drum grooves and a charming carpet of acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies and percussions. It all helps in creating a piece that feels easy on the soul, relatable and just very friendly.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Howard explains: “The song was first workshopped with my previous band on a rainy day in Cape Woolamai. Once the opening lyric, “She breaks” came bursting out, I knew what direction the song would take but it would eventually take a few years to find the right sonic atmosphere.”
