Maria Monroy Shares Gentle Alt-Folk Gem ‘Birdsong’

Guiding her artistic project from its infancy to wider recognition, Maria Monroy is certainly on the right path. Her latest effort ‘Birdsong’ took us by surprise; you don’t see a lot of second singles being that good. Following up on last year’s debut ‘Feathers’, the London-based songstress pens a track that feels soothing yet intense, evocative yet soft and fragile.

Built on alt-folk and pop stylings, ‘Birdsong’ champions organic arrangements with blissful instrumentation and controlled euphoria; Monroy’s vocals are immensely controlled, yet hard-hitting and relevant. Developing at a slow pace, the overall quality of the piece initiates a lyrical catharsis that completely wraps the listener in magical sonic goo, a fitting end to a glorious song. A tenor saxophone solo is a gift we don’t deserve – but that we greatly appreciate.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Maria explains: “To me, ‘Birdsong’ is a song for that moment when you encounter someone new and there is an instant connection in terms of similar ways of thinking, speaking and approaching life. It’s that feeling when you click and understand their mind, or figuratively, their ‘Birdsong’”.
