We have been lucky enough to be part of Marc Soucy’s sonic journey for the past few months. Boasting wide imagination and a heightened sense of sound design and compositional prowess, the Boston-based artist has been penning a series of instrumental gems, often with a cinematic and poignant sentiment to them. Following up on ‘That Thing You Said’ – “another stunning slice of eclectic extravaganza”, as described by us – Soucy now returns with ‘The Tong’, a piece that’s decisively more action-driven and vibrant.
Marking the start of a new series of releases called ‘STIR: Soundscapes Evoking Realities Only Imagined’, ‘The Tong’ features darker and more industrial-sounding elements, infused with expansive female vocal harmonies. Such a contrast makes for a particularly epic, if not legendary result, even jumping into darkwave, retro elements. The references are all very electronic, and in a sense, there’s some 80s Midi energy in it, a sign that Soucy is indeed influenced by his early musical passions.
Speaking about the concept behind ‘The Tong’, Marc explains: “My music is intended to elicit a series of emotions and hopefully the construct of “stories”, either in your own imagination or as provided by a music video. These songs will have accompanying videos. …Conceptually there is a world / global music component as well as a sci-fi or surrealism aspect to the project.”
