Marc Soucy Returns with Elegant, Epic Piece ‘Montana’

Anything that emerges from Marc Soucy’s musical genius is often deeply eclectic and evocative. Furthermore, we have always enjoyed the ‘time-capsule’ quality that many of his records exude. Growing up in the peak MIDI era (the 80s/90s), the American composer is particularly keen on the kind of digital tone you might find in old workstation keyboards. Yet, his latest release ‘Montana’ seems to embrace a more elegant, luscious approach, engaging in classically infused strings and a mellow piano, gently guiding the listeners through an ocean of texture and emotional energy.

‘Montana’ continues Soucy’s monumental series of soundscapes and compositions, the so-called ‘STIR: Soundscapes Evoking Realities Only Imagined’. Crucially, such a body of work collects hybrid pieces, which explains the variety in Montana’s sound design choices. Overall, we are taken aback by how beautiful the piece is: while it’s delicate and round, there’s also a veiled component of nostalgia and melancholia, something that makes sense with the reasoning behind the track. Also, the epicness in it is not to be discounted.

Speaking about the inspiration beyond the record, Marc explains: “It was inspired by the development of our nation, and how we got here. The century between the 1840s and the 1940s saw the United States develop as a superpower while operating as a democracy. With all of its problems, America truly is a melting pot of cultures and ideas. Some people have been victims in this growth, however.”
