Some records take time to be absorbed and understood, they need to be ‘internalised’, if you will. ‘Permanent Recovery’ is one such record, a stunning album showcasing the intricate and meaningful storytelling of Californian songstress Mara Sol. Hailing from the rather famous Coachella Valley, Sol engages in expansive and nuanced songwriting, exploring human relationships and how they shape us throughout our lifetime.
Built on a stream of friendly alt-folk and classic pop stylings, ‘Permanent Recovery’ features five original tracks, plus a series of curious instrumental interludes. Those interludes are almost ambient, quite ethereal and cathartic. Perhaps they are a way to let the listeners get comfortable with every song, allowing for personal reflection and emotional processing. Mara’s evocative and lush vocals are a perfect match for such a stunning album.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Permanent Recovery’, Sol explains: “In this EP I tell personal stories about friendships, sisterhood, and even relationships with parents. They flow in a unique story of past trauma and the coping process that comes with that. Writing these songs was a healing exercise for me, a recovery journey that I am compelled to share with others.”
