Magdalia Returns with Driving Dark-Pop Record ‘Tunnel Vision’

‘Tunnel Vision’ is a remarkable follow-up to Melbourne-based Magdalia’s 2022 triumph ‘Great Expectations’, further proving her writing chops and cementing her evolution into an electronic-based pop force. The synth bass arrives with glorious drive, a striking 80s-tinged soundscape that has a thoroughly modern moodiness, reminiscent of Lorde’s striking debut ‘Pure Heroine’. Magdalia’s vocals enter with a rich warmth that is a true treat to the ears, and weave above the pulsing instrumental with magnificent presence.

Written in collaboration with Elizabeth Drummond and Jarred Young during her Cardinia Music Residency, the track has a youthful energy and some stand-out lyrics, such as the cutting phrase “Don’t answer my questions, or answer to God”. The combination of her lyrical relatability and instrumental spark is definitely something that could capture a new pop audience, sitting happily on a lineup with the likes of Olivia Rodigio.

If you like the sound of Florence Welch-style vocals set to a drum machine, this track of frustration and exasperated heartache is for you.
