Fiercely supporting Canadian Folk talent Maddisun, we are happy to shine further light on her latest album release with a keen interview, focusing on the recent changes in her artistry. We recently wrote about ‘Home Is Where The Music Is’, explaining: “while still containing traces of her signature folk and country style, the record also champions slightly modern styles, exploring electronica and pop in order to find a new and exciting musical formula”.
Taken from the album, ‘Running’ is the latest single to be paired with a music video. Championing sleazy and luscious Folk, the track finds its perfect imagery companionship in the western-flavoured visuals shot by Maddisun and Jemmy Rempel in BC. In our opinion, it also represents perfectly the Canadian talent’s aesthetic, standing at the crossroads of Folk, Country and Pop.

Hey Maddisun, hope you are well! We last spoke a couple of years ago, on the occasion of the release of ‘Self Reflections’. Has life been kind to you since then? 🙂
Things have changed so much since the release of my first album! I have definitely learned a whole heck of a lot about releasing music, and the music industry in general. Things have been steadily moving upward, and I’m really excited about what the rest of 2022 will bring.
A big, scary pandemic happened – has that affected your music-making at all? or helped you focus on your creativity?
It has definitely affected the way I share my music with the world. Things turned very digital, at a time when I was really refining my live performance. So, that changed a lot of things for me. I grew so much in my online presence and how I marketed my music, I think that the time away from live music gave me a chance to really refine my persona and my online image. We make the best of it, right?
What are your favourite artists at the moment? Anyone from Canada and BC we should check out?
100% obsessed with Maggie Rogers and her new album “Surrender”! I’ve also been listening to a lot of Frazey Ford, who is a fantastic female Canadian artist.
You have just released a new album, ‘Home Is Where The Music Is’. What does it represent for you?
This album holds a very special message for me. I have done a lot of travelling, and lived abroad in Ireland, so I have made many different places a “home”. I went back to Ireland to write songs for this album. As I hadn’t been travelling in years, sometimes I felt a little anxious when I was alone overseas, but the thing that made me feel “at home” in myself, was playing music. So wherever I am in the world, once I am able to connect with my music, I’m at home. My dad also has a special appearance on the album… and music has been a part of my “home” since I was born!
Your sound has certainly evolved, and in fact, from the record we can hear a certain variety in its sonic references; you have your mainstream pop bangers such as ‘Don’t Say No’, next to more Folk and Country efforts such as ‘On The Outside’. Which one is the real Maddisun? 🙂
Ah well, both are the real Maddisun! I like to keep things varied and diverse. I hear all these different styles, sounds, influences, and I don’t like to think that one or the other is or isn’t the real me. I write about this in the song “True Me” from the album! My home is in the song, and everything I release is a true reflection of what I am feeling and the sounds I’m hearing. Sometimes I may lean more in a certain sonic direction, but you’ll always get diversity from me!
You went to Los Angeles earlier this year to focus on the recording of the album; how did that go? Did the city inspire you in any particular way?
Recording out in L.A. was amazing! I was introduced to so many diverse music scenes. It’s a huge city with so much to offer musicians. It can feel like opportunities are a little out of reach sometimes because there are so many artists fighting for it out there, but it was incredibly inspiring to meet so many musicians and artists with the same grind mindset.
How do you usually perform in live gigs? Any Europe gig anytime on the horizon?
Lately, I have been LOVING performing with the full band. I love doing the front woman thing, dancing around on stage, singing out into the audience… really giving myself a chance to showcase my strongest instrument: my voice. I also like to play as a solo or duo act though! Oh yes, I have already performed in Europe and will be back soon!
Leave us with a call to action; why should listeners stream ‘Home Is Where The Music Is’?
If you want to feel uplifted, inspired, and give your day a positive spin, listen to this album. It’s so much about just being the true you, and not letting anyone tell you what to do, or who you should be. “Don’t Say No” is a huge anthem for that, too. Just saying yes to yourself.
RECOMMENDED!
