Gearing up for an upcoming album releasing in May – ‘On the phone with my mom’ – NYC-based songstress Maddie Regent has just unveiled ‘Turtleneck’, her latest single, an expansive, meaningful and comforting gem that’s as evocative and vibrant as it is catchy and memorable. Built on luscious, spacious pop matter, the track is rather whimsical and floaty, and while the dream-pop label might not strictly apply to the project, we’d argue there’s a great deal of escapism in it.
It’s also heartwarming: speaking to post-break confusion and nostalgic feelings, Maddie seeks to reassure the listeners that it’s a common experience, empowering them to take the next step and discover new emotional outlets. As she explains: “‘Turtleneck’ is about how lost you can get after getting out of a relationship – it’s tempting to ground yourself in the memory of what was, rather than accepting what is.”
