Maddie Regent Describes an Inevitable Heartbreak in ‘The other shoe’

Just under a month ago, we were enthusiastically describing Maddie Regent’s ‘Turtleneck’ as “rather whimsical and floaty”. We stand by our words: the track was certainly dreamy and ethereal, yet also poppy and relatable. It was, in a sense, a perfect blend between Regent’s blissful, bright imagery and her mainstream leniency.

‘The other shoe’ relies more heavily on the latter: an uplifting, vibrant pop anthem, the single highlights Maddie’s ability to write expansive, luscious pop efforts, yes still maintaining her pensive, misty character, a quality that is more obvious via the record’s sonic livery. Still drenched in long textures and buoyant instrumentation, the piece perfectly matches Regent’s delicate, heartwarming vocals.

Hailing from Toronto, Maddie Regent is now gearing up for a long-awaited upcoming album, ‘On the phone with my mom’, expected on May 16th. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘The other shoe’, she explains: “You’re constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop—almost hoping it does, so you can finally move on” – referring to an inevitable, crushing heartbreak.
