At times, we encounter artists who don’t just see pop music as an exercise in popular aesthetics. Rather, they see it as an opportunity for enlightened personal expression, managing to pack their records with meaningfulness and empowering lyricism, offering a helping and inspirational hand to whoever may be listening. Lucy Crisp belongs to this exact category, penning highly introspective anthems that delve into her own struggles and self-growth.
‘Locked Down’ is the strongest evidence of that: written to manifest Crisp’s struggles with the many pandemic lockdowns, the song aims to highlight how they strongly affected people with hidden disabilities, particularly affecting mental health over a significant period of time. While such a theme is rather deep and heavy on its own, Lucy gives it a shining and bubbly pop contour, helping the track become more of a fierce and proud anthem, wrapped in energetic electro-pop and evocative vocals.
Speaking about the record, Crisp explains: “I’ve always wanted to create a nostalgic modern synth-pop song that allows my fans to either dance, break objects in a rage room, or both. More importantly, I want my fans to get lost in the upbeat rhythms and feel free to express themselves and their emotions however they want to.”
