Once again, I am indebted to fellow writer Gabriel Mazza. He recently turned me on to a tune called ‘Locked Down‘ by Nottingham-based pop sensation Lucy Crisp, and the talented artist now returns with her debut EP! Three years in the making, ’65 Roses’ is a deeply personal look at Lucy’s life living with cystic fibrosis. Describing the EP as “an introduction to myself as a person and a true reflection of the challenges I face physically and mentally,” the musician leaves no stone unturned in her search for a more caring world.
‘One Summer’s Day’ begins the EP, a sonically sparkling and upbeat little number that is seriously danceable and the perfect start to proceedings. The aforementioned ‘Locked Down’ then follows, and we are greeted with more energetic synth-pop goodness that is simply too alluring to pass over.
‘Call Me’ then makes its introduction, and shifts to a more mellow and lower intensity. In a song concerning the importance of talking about one’s mental health to someone, Lucy brings forth a message of being comfortable with vulnerability and talking openly.
An interlude called ‘Normal Life’, ‘I Deserve Better’, and ‘I Miss You’ complete ’65 Roses’, and I’m jealous that you get to experience them for the very first time. What an incredible debut EP! Here’s to many more!
