Emerging from Sydney, Lucy Burke is at her core a nuanced songwriter, delving into introspection and personal experience in order to deliver material that’s relatable and meaningful. With a long career in music and in the performing arts, Burke recently made the switch from organic, country and pop-based matter to a more modern electronic outlook, channelling synthetisers and intimate beats to complement her hypnotising and evocative vocals.
‘On the Edge’ is the strongest evidence of that. Following up on previous effort ‘Cliché’, built on cinematic and orchestral tones, the record feels extremely contemporary, showcasing Burke’s ability to always finds her lyrical voice, no matter the musical setting. With a pulsing bass and groovy yet polite beats, ‘On the Edge’ delivers a majestic chorus, so hopeful and uplifting. Lucy’s lyrical delivery is an absolute treat, containing a touch of soulful and jazz energy too.
Describing the inspiration behind the track, Burke explains: “It’s an upbeat song about overcoming those haunting thoughts and doubts that prevent you from moving forward and stepping over the edge into the unknown”.
