Thinking about it, it makes sense: a talented 19 years-old making music about a coming-of-age saga, exploring the challenges of growing up in an ever-changing reality. Lucas Fournier might be young, but his musical talent appears mature and ripe. After debuting last year with the album ‘Many Waters’, the creative Canadian crowns a productive year with an EP, ‘Who Are We’, a passionate scream into the complexity of becoming an adult.
Opening with the title track ‘Who Are We’, the record introduces itself with kindness, balanced between folk, pop and rock, eventually creating its own poignant, intense formula, one where Fournier is the main character. Showcasing his guitar playing, the song feels poignant and nostalgic, the perfect tie to ‘Friday in the Basement’, a more introspective, alternative piece, somehow recalling old-school Radiohead.
‘Brothers’ doubles down on emotional vibes, allowing us to fully appreciate Fournier’s complex and refined vocal tone; a real treat. ‘Lakeside’ is perhaps the most eclectic number on the records, echoing a style very close to Bon Iver, cited by Lucas as one of his inspirations. ‘Golden’ closes the EP the same way it started, with a guitar-based ballad we won’t forget anytime soon.
