Listening to Pistols At Dawn’s Newest Single ‘Under The Surface’

Emerging from Atlanta, Pistols At Dawn is certainly one of the fiercest bands we have heard in a while. There’s a lot to unpack about them: sharing a long and complex history, the group has been pushing through a challenging artistic journey, which ultimately brought them to construct an energetic, dazzling personal style that lies at the crossroad between classic rock and more modern, alternative tones. What matters for now though is their latest release, the album ‘Ascension’, which also contains lead single ‘Under The Surface’.

Sharing a wealth of musicianship that comes from its very talented members, Pistols At Dawn can boast a long discography, which by now has earned them more than 16k monthly listeners on Spotify. Records like ‘Cold’ – their most streamed track – went a long way toward ensuring the group would reach audiences far and wide. With ‘Under The Surface’, they are obviously doubling down, offering a fuzzy, haunting record, yet quite friendly. The song maintains an approachable edge, layering Hodges’ intelligible lead vocals on top of a more gritty and hardcore instrumental.

Eventually, we find it hard to resist Pistols At Dawn’s alluring notes. Extra-tight drums work perfectly against the wall of sound provided by the guitars, occasionally reminding us of light nu metal. The lyricism is pretty dark, and deals with the most secretive corners of our society. Nevertheless, ‘Under The Surface’ is a track we are willing to listen to on a daily basis. Trust us.
