Jumping into ‘Oblivion’ with fierceness and charisma, Liars Teeth take the listener on a rather meaningful journey, one lined with nuanced guitar work and melancholic lyricism. Part of their newly-released ‘Sungrazer’ EP, the track sets the tone for the rest of the record, with its elegant yet intense and dystopic aura. ‘Modern Romance’ seems to follow suit, keeping the pace at a relatively steady level, while adding a pinch of emotional energy to it. Vocals feel more introspective, definitely intimate, a factor that enhances the contrast between verse and chorus, with the latter being an explosion of colours and nostalgia.
Title-track ‘Sungrazer’ reiterates some of the band’s main strengths, namely the ability to create stark and hard-hitting guitar riffs, balanced between alt-rock and shoegaze nuances, coupled with the way they are able to build a strongly pop-oriented topline. Props to their songwriting work too, as further showcased in ‘Void’.
Delving into the lyrical inspiration behind the EP, Liars Teeth explain: “The record explores the complexities of the mind in the face of perpetual instant gratification and social media. Written as a fable for the Digital age, it shines a light on the isolation of constant connectivity and the challenge of finding direction in the noise.”
