Authentic, soulful, and full of character, ‘Time’ and ‘Old Machine’ are the latest country-infused offerings from Nunavut-based singer/songwriter Lester Slade. With both tunes being recorded live at Never Nuthin Recordings, there’s a beautifully raw and intimate feel that seeps through the whiskey-soaked banjo numbers. It’s almost as if you’re in the studio with Lester and Co., and you’re drawn into a moment that’s somehow both personal and universal. Just outstanding!
A potent and intriguing blend of classic country and alternative folk, with a hint of punk attitude thrown in for good measure, ‘Time’ and ‘Old Machine’ find their sonic inspiration from legends like Hank Williams and The Ramones. Sure, those two names are usually not synonymous with one another, but that’s the genius of Lester Slade’s work. As he so eloquently puts it, “These aren’t just folks songs…They’re a statement!”
Slade’s two new singles showcase serious heart-on-sleeve stuff, and it’s the honesty and vulnerability I find myself falling for the most with his music. There’s just a genuineness that shines through and makes it nearly impossible not to “hear him out”.
It’s a masterful way to end the year, and I have no doubt Lester Slade will be back with more goodness in 2025!
