We have a history with Leonardo Barilaro, having featured his ‘365 Days of Entropy’ composition back in 2023. As time passes, the so-called ‘space pianist’ seems to be getting bolder and bolder with his work, gradually increasing the amount of decadence, eclecticism and dissonance in it. ‘Seamless’ is the perfect evidence of that. Barilaro’s latest effort, the record layers Leonardo’s virtuosity with a myriad of prepared pianos and digital samples, making for a surprising, fresh and boundary-pushing EP.
It’s a limitless – or a ‘Seamless’ – offering, a series of expansive musical nuggets that don’t play by the rule. They could be likened to the never-ending nature of space, which deeply connects with Barilaro’s other passion, being an aerospace engineer. It’s the intertwining between those two professions, music and science, that greatly influences the Malta-based creative. It makes for legendary artistry, truly showcasing Leonardo as a unique and authentic musical giant.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Barilaro explains: “The EP is inspired by humanity’s endless pursuit of the unknown and presents a cinematic journey through myth, space exploration and existential transformation.” This statement sums up the project rather well, and it also explains why it’s had much success: there’s a precise concept and goal behind it, making it relevant on a holistic cultural plane.
