Leah Ashton Releases Eclectic and Soulful Album ‘Late Bloomer’

Such a wonderful record. We have felt particularly at home in the soulful, soul-drenched, jazz-inspired musical goodness Leah Ashton has to offer. Emerging from Los Angeles, the talented singer finds herself in the midst of her lifetime, reflecting on past achievements and potential regrets. Offering a helping hand to whoever feels as if they are not where they’d like to be in life, ‘Late Bloomer’ is an album many will relate to (we certainly do).

Co-produced by Grammy award-winning musician Jonah Levine of LA’s Katalyst Collective, the record offers a detailed glimpse into Ashton’s personal universe. Song after song, the listeners are able to reckon with themselves, thanks to a coming-of-age musical saga which will keep them captivated for a long time.

Title-track ‘Late Bloomer’ carries the weight of the whole record, potentially being one of the most jazz-like episodes in it. Of course, pop is still a big argument, with ‘Shut Your Mouth’ and ‘Around Here’ trending on straight beats and conventional structures, together with an elegant flavouring that is particularly relevant, thanks to its deep poignancy. ‘Faded Stars and Stripes’ features a charming saxophone section, courtesy of Eric Letta. Blues is the keyword.

The album continues in emotional fashion, thanks to piano-heavy ballad ‘Burn It Down’, and crooning anthem ‘Meet Me in New Orleans’. The funk energy in ‘Better Days’ rejuvenates the listener, while transitioning to the end of the record. Arena-ready anthem ‘Not Backing Down’ brings Ashton’s sonic journey to a close, making us wish for more.

Overall, an album worth listening to, especially thanks to Leah Ashton’s mesmerising and precise vocal tone. A true masterclass in musicianship.
