If you are looking for elegance and retro energy, you just found them. ‘Corpus Christi’ is a slice of retro energy and unmatched charisma, delivered by Le Concorde’s evocative, dynamic vocals. Drenching himself in Sophistipop – in true 80s fashion – the American creative delivers a sonic journey that’s eclectic, musically witty and rather advanced. That’s not synth-pop: channelling veiled R&B influences, the piece uses vintage instrumentation in a complex arrangement, one that reveals close ties to 80s staples such as The Blue Nile or Scritti Politti.
Known by day as Stephen Brecker, Le Concorde is a talented songwriter and vocalist. ‘Corpus Christi’ benefits from the collective work of producer Calum Malcolm, keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, Jr.(Jellyfish, Beck), bassist Vinzenz Benjamin and drummer Ash Soan, all celebrated musicians in their own right. Such musical prowess is mirrored by meaningful lyricism, with Brecker paying a moved homage to the mystery of miracles through a lovingly religious perspective.
In particular, Le Concorde refers to the figure of Carlo Acutis, here referred to as “Future Patron Saint of the Internet”. There’s something uniquely powerful in such a concept, with Stephen exploring the depth of eucharistic miracles and the way they relate to our reality. As he explains: “To the faithful, no proof is required; to the unbeliever, no proof is sufficient.”
