We approached ‘Rent Free’ with an open mind, eager to understand Musgrave’s nuanced artistry and find out more about the project. We couldn’t have been more right: the track is an absolute fierce banger, built on fashionable pop-punk stylings while retaining its popular and relatable character. A slightly nostalgic record for everyone missing the early ‘2000s.
Echoing the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne, Laura manages to write a piece that feels empowering and introspective, delving into the world of broken relationships and the struggle of letting go. Being such an energetic and punchy effort, ‘Rent Free’ seeks to inspire every grieving lover out there to not give up, find their authenticity to then move on to a brighter future.
Musgrave’s vocals are especially hard-hitting, with their evocative and wholesome nature that perfectly fits such spikey and gritty instrumental. After all, she’s currently under GRAMMY® consideration: there’s a reason for that. While the industry might still be sleeping on Laura, it’s just a matter of time before she’ll connect with a wider audience. We’ll be here supporting her.
