There’s a lot to explore in ‘Yves Klein’. An expansive and avant-garde piece, the record is one of the most original and quirky offerings we have heard in a while. At its core, we find electrifying and eclectic sound design drenched in ethereal textures and the occasional classical element. Hints of Chinese percussions reflect the artists’ own roots: in a way, LÂLKA seeks to draw an imaginary line between modern electronica and ancient cultures, allowing her to present material that’s visionary, bold and thought-provoking.
A rather snappy and short piece, ‘Yves Klein’ doesn’t take long to hypnotise the listeners and transport them to an alternative universe. A series of dark and gloomy dubstep bass patches are layered upon Asian-flavoured percussions and vocal sampling, eventually imploding into a poignant and spacious piano outro.
We are impressed. Speaking about the single, LÂLKA explains: “I wanted to incorporate hints of my Chinese and Bidayuh heritage into the music without it being blatantly cliche. “The tuning system of the ethnic instruments was definitely an interesting challenge to incorporate into a dubstep/trap track like Yves Klein.”
