We discovered Kylie Rothfield just a few months ago, celebrating her previous single, ‘Never Loved Somebody,’ as “incredibly wide and relatable.” The American creative is able to write striking material, further augmented by her vivid, intense vocal tone, which makes even the simplest songs immediately striking. ‘Old Man’ is Rothfield’s latest single, a punchier, rowdier effort delving into Kylie’s post-punk influences.
Co-written with queer indie alt-pop icon Mothé, ‘Old Man’ tells a cautionary tale around a misguided relationship with an older man. Once again, we are impressed by the quality of Rothfield’s choruses, always so massive and hard-hitting. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, she explains: “‘Old Man’ is an electrifying and empowering anthem about idealizing & falling for an older man, only to realize he’s dating you to feel younger & better about himself.”
