Coming across Komuna Collective has been a breath of fresh air. The keen reader knows how eager we are to discover creatives doing their own things, artists pushing boundaries and blending tradition and futurism. Well, hailing from an Oxford underground club, a group of musicians and DJs under the moniker Komuna Collective has slowly been developing a modern take on classical material.
‘1 L0V3 Y0U L1G3T1’ is the perfect evidence of that. Marking the eclectic outfit’s debut record, the piece seeks to pay homage to Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti. What starts as a philosophical take on Ligeti’s impactful material soon transforms into a practical stream of avant-garde tones and orchestral flair. Taking inspiration from some of his famous melodies and ostinatos, ‘1 L0V3 Y0U L1G3T1’ pair electronica and string quartet, together with spoken word extracts from Ligeti’s lectures and seminars.
