Kid Lazuras Returns with Concept Album ‘Utopia’

The keen listener will recall reading about Kid Lazuras on our blog not long ago, when we delved into ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’, a charming record we described as “an unexpected treat, a record that starts slowly, keeping a low profile, then grows in intensity and melancholia as it progresses.” Now, the Bristol-based talent unveils the project’s latest effort, a long album that greatly showcases all the unique qualities Kid Lazuras seems to enjoy.

Over twelve tracks, ‘Utopia’ tries to draw a common theme, specifically focusing on self-identity and finding one’s place in the world. You see, this is a modern record for modern times. Everyone seems to be lost nowadays, not knowing how to take their life forward. Kid Lazuras tries to answer that very same question, both lyrically and sonically.

Drenched in dystopian guitar riff, strategic dissonance and spacious bright matter, the album borrows from the best shoegaze, new wave and leftfield tradition to create something that feels fresh, almost futuristic. Doubling down on their eclectic influences, Kid Lazuras explains: “The structure of ‘Utopia’ is in part inspired by Miles Davis’ legendary album ‘Kind Of Blue’, mimicking its circularity.”
