Kenton Hall Returns with Meaningful Concept Album ‘Idiopath’

Reading up about Kenton Hall, one might quickly be intimidated by the cultural magnitude of the British artist. Not only he is a successful musician – starting out in the 90s band craze to then diving into a solo career – but he’s also a gifted scriptwriter, actor and director, having taken part in multiple projects in audio and video settings. While you might be confused about how to approach his work, we could suggest a reasonable starting point. Look him up on your favourite streaming service and play his music: no questions asked, just let his signature folk and pop lyricism takes you on a dreamy journey around human nature.

Reminding us of his willingness to create, Kenton Hall recently returned to the music scene adding ‘The Necessary Measures’ to his moniker. The project releases ‘Idiopath’, a long experimental album featuring 33 ⅓ songs, a collection of reflective and playful gems with a strong cinematic flair. In them, the listener will find Hall’s personal lyricism, stemming from personal experience and philosophical journeys. Written over the course of a few years, ‘Idiopath’ represents Kenton’s welcome return into recorded music. Clearly, he’s been productive, music never left his side.

‘Idiopath’ is not alone: ‘Omniopath’ is its musical twin, featuring alternative versions of all tracks with a plethora of illustrious guests, including Steve Nieve, The Swinging Laurels, and Vivien Scotson. Adding to the excitement of the release is the accompanying music video for the project’s lead single, ‘Maybe.’ Written and directed by Mbili Munthali, the stunning one-shot video follows the highs and lows of a female-female relationship. The song itself is a prog-rock-inspired anthem, led by Hall’s emotive vocals over a bed of restrained electric guitar and airy percussion, creating a dream-like effect.
