I first discovered Ukrainian-American singer Kelsie Kimberlin when she released her magnificent cover of Miley Cyrus’ ‘Rooting For My Baby’. The baby, in Kelsie’s version, was her beloved Ukraine. Now, the musician is back with a brand new original single called ‘Spoof I Wonder’, and again she uses her music to draw the world’s attention to the ongoing war. It’s a haunting and deeply moving tune that features hints of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’, putting the listener in a thoughtful, reflective, and melancholic space. A delicate piano and Kimberlin’s hypnotic, soothing vocals lead the way, and there’s as much to admire in the absence as there is in the substance.
“The war has affected me deeply,” says the artist. “So I will be releasing a number of songs this year about Ukraine, the war, and my feelings”. For the track’s music video, Kelsie collaborated with award-winning Ukrainian photojournalist Andriy Dubchak and director Zack Gross to produce a poignant piece of art.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Kelsie Kimberlin is a force to be reckoned with. Her vocal ability and dedication to activism make her a much-needed presence in today’s music industry. Here’s to many more Kelsie!
