Emerging from Boston, pop songstress Kelsey Blackstone returned last week with a new record, reminding us why she’s one of the best newcomers around.
Such a luscious slice of bubbly pop. Drenched in funk and soul influences, ‘My Superstitions’ manages to contrast cynical and blue lyrical matter with an uplifting and dazzling sonic framework, creating puzzling pieces that showcase Blackstone’s songwriting genius.
We knew what she was capable of: after featuring ‘Lay You Down’ last year, we had a compelling taste of the Boston native’s eclectic talent. There’s something extremely inviting in the way she’s able to blend pop and mainstream elements with jazzy, soulful sensibilities. This alone should be a worthy indicator of her artistic magnitude.
A magnitude that’s more widely reflected in the singer’s charity work, balanced between music and social activism. Notable is Hug The Tree Inc., a platform dedicated to showcasing local musicians while raising money for worthy causes. Pair all of the aforementioned with a plethora of academic recognitions (including the prestigious Berklee College of Music), and you have got yourself an absolute champion, a ray of light in these dull, monotonous times.
Circling back to ‘My Superstitions’, it is appropriate to highlight how perfect Blackstone’s vocals are. While it would be easy to dismiss the track as a simple, light-hearted pop number, its author’s convoluted voice manages to paint malleable, ever-changing melodies, never afraid of engaging in some charming ad-lib action.
