While approaching Keith Kugo, we couldn’t help but analyze the many ways his music mesmerizes us. There are two big things to consider here: firstly, his production work. The Adelaide resident manages to build a personal, authentic aural framework, serving refined sound designs and innovative sonic solutions. While a lot of his output can be categorised as hip-hop and RnB, there’s always a strong leftfield, electronic side to it, even avant-garde at times. This characterises the project positively, making Kugo a peculiar offering on the music scene.
Secondly, there are Keith’s vocals. Prone to spoken words as he is to singing, Kugo develops a personal flow, bouncing from section to section effortlessly, His tone is mellow, yet charming, sliding through the tracks directly into the listener’s ears. This variety in themes and references can perhaps be linked to Kugo’s multidisciplinary roots. Also specialising in architecture and painting, the Aussie talent is able to expand the depth and field of his work, creating a richer, bigger picture. To note, his multicultural roots, stemming from Zimbabwe.
‘CURIOSITY I’ is Kugo’s latest effort, a 6-track EP which delves into everything said above. In particular, ‘DIGITAL’ has been chosen as the lead single. A heartfelt and relatable gem, the track oozes synthesiser action and personal storytelling. An absolute delight.
