Keekai Shares Introspective EP ‘Handsome / Pretty’

Delving into ‘Handsome / Pretty’ gives us the ability to get to know Keekai on a deeper level. You see, the talented songwriter and producer pens an EP that feels highly personal, intimate and packed with introspection. Of Filipino and American heritage, Keekai champions a fascinating Queer aesthetic, all expressed in his music through evocative lyricism and relatable hooks. Sonically, we are in RnB territories, although electronic references are also common.

Mellow, soothing and groovy: the record is a worthy discovery. ‘Lockdown’ opens the EP with kaleidoscopic tones, blending arpeggiated synth with soulful harmonies; perfect settings for a song that celebrates independence and the ability to recognise what’s holding us back. ‘Patiently’ moves into more wholesome and candlelit RnB stylings, empowering a track that feels as hopeful as it is nostalgic.

‘Handsome Guys’ brings the record to a close in neo-soul fashion, perhaps the most positive effort on the record.  Passionate and seductive, the song celebrates an online crush, and all the longing thoughts coming with it. Speaking about the EP, Keekai explains: “This mixtape is a transitional statement to who I was during the winters of 2021, to this newly awakened Keekai in the spring of 2023.”
