Kate Ellis Takes ‘Hurt’ and Makes it Her Own

Jeremy Bregman

It’s true…we don’t often feature cover songs. But, when we heard Kate Ellis‘ cover of Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Hurt’, we didn’t even think twice! The London-based singer/songwriter recently released three hundred limited edition vinyls of her critically acclaimed second album ‘Spirals’, and she’s snuck her cover of ‘Hurt’ on there as a special bonus track. “The physical properties of a vinyl record have always been very important to me,” says Kate. “I’ve got some cherished records of my dads and I love that they are old and were loved by him”. I completely understand where she’s coming from. I too have hundreds of my father’s old records, and I adore them to bits!

Getting back to ‘Hurt’, Kate’s cover is truly a hauntingly beautiful rendition. With her soulful and emotive vocals, she takes the tune to new heights, injecting it with a level of intimacy and rawness that is utterly captivating. The stripped-down arrangement allows her voice to take centre stage, drawing the listener in with every note. It’s a powerful and moving performance that showcases Kate’s impressive range and versatility as an artist.

It’s really no wonder that Kate Ellis is starting to get the recognition she deserves. It’s long overdue in our opinion!
