Many people know Kat Von D, but her musical endeavours are perhaps less famous than other areas of her business. Well, we are here to change that perception: it turns out that the American icon boasts an incredible musical education, being a trained singer and a bold, daring creative (something that, in truth, we knew already from her overall persona). ‘My Side of the Mountain’ is her latest album, a collection of haunting, intense pieces drenched in dark, industrial-flavoured electronica and synthwave flavourings.
In particular, the track ‘I Am A Machine’ conquers our attention. Prominently noisy and industrial, the piece delves with both hands in the darkest of darkwave, while focusing on screamy vocals and the contrast with Von D’s melodic, evocative tone. Featuring fellow singer Alissa White-Gluz (from Arch Enemy), the record is a very compelling piece, one that once again showcases the magnitude of Kat Von D’s artistry.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘I Am A Machine’, she explains: “I’ve been such a huge fan of Arch Enemy for so long, it’s been a dream come true getting to create music with Alissa. I was actually nervous about even asking her to sing on one of my songs, considering I make more dark, electronic music and not metal, but was so happy/relieved when she agreed to be a part of this album.”
