Emerging from Oslo, Norway, creative powerhouse K-Syran is a true artistic spirit: not only she’s a talented singer and songwriter, but she also deals in acting, poetry and visual art. A multi-disciplinary artist in her own right, the Norwegian talent is about to release a charismatic, kaleidoscopic multi-genre musical album, ‘Inappropriate’.
Drenched in jazz influences, the record also borrows heavily from pop, funk and blues, providing the perfect framework for K-Syran’s evocative and precise vocals. ‘Inappropriate’ is expected for the 18th of November.
Intrigued by the project and her many achievements, we caught up with K-Syran to find out more about her artistry and future goals… Interview below!
Hey K-Syran, how is it going? First of all, congratulations on the upcoming single. You seem very active (professionally speaking) – what’s your secret?
Creative juices flowing in my veins. Believe it’s from my parents, they gave me the confidence to go for it. As my mum always said, you are the only one who can stop yourself, never ever take no for an answer.
You are a true multi-disciplinary artist, with work and achievements collected in a vast plethora of artistic fields. What motivates you to create?
I myself thought of that question and I’ve come to the conclusion that I would not feel happy in this life if I could not express myself. So it is very important to encourage yourself.
Is there an art medium you prefer over the others? Perhaps music? Where do you feel most at home?
As I started out as an actress trained at RADA & Guildhall School Of Music & Drama acting is my first passion but as music has always been in my life through my dad it feels so satisfying writing my own songs and of course performing them in front of an audience.
You are about to release ‘Inappropriate’, an original album packed with expert musicians and mesmerising compositions. How should we approach the record? It feels quite multi-genre in its essence. Does that represent you as an artist?
I am so proud of this album and can’t wait for the public to hear it. Gauthier Toux, Leon Phal, Erwan Valazza & Axel Lussiez have amazing chemistry between them, you feel the love from their instruments. To work with such talented musicians is a pure dream come true. To be honest I love every type of music, country music, opera/classical, jazz, rock, hard rock( was told I sounded like Nina Hagen) pop, and dance I’m open to it all.
Do you feel more confident writing music alone, or within a team?
That’s a great question! I love writing by myself, finding melodies and lyrics, but great excitement in collaborations. I love working with StoneBridge, a fellow Viking.
We have visited in Oslo in 2019, for Bylarm Festival. Fantastic place. Does the city inspire you in any way?
Oslo is my city so, of course, I love it, I must say though it has developed so much and just getting better and better. Nature inspires me and Norway has plenty. The fjords, the forest, mountains the mystic, the trolls, the change in seasons. It really is an inspirational country.
Artistically speaking, what challenges have the last two years presented you with?
Actually, it’s been great. I finally sat in my office and finished my children’s book, Rocky’s Adventure. A gorgeous story about my parrot who disappeared for 6 months and returned, with beautiful illustrations by famous artist Martina Selway. And a TV series I’ve been working on set in Verbier, the stunning alps of Switzerland. I also did quite a few virtual concerts.
What are the next steps for K-Syran?
This year is super exciting! The U.K. thriller, Hounded, which I’m in, just came out, and my self-produced movie, Ellida, is entering different festivals, I have already received 4 awards. My album, Inappropriate, is coming out end of November, my last collaboration with StoneBridge, So in Love With You, got onto Grammy Ballot, and I’m working on three new projects, but those I can’t tell you about yet.
RECOMMENDED!
