Junodef Unveil Glorious New Album ‘Catastrophical’

It’s been intriguing to follow London newcomers Junodef on their journey to their latest EP, ‘Catastrophical’. The group has taken on many hats and many shapes, eventually landing on a broad ‘art-rock’ identity. Nevertheless, listeners will surely notice the great eclecticism present in the band’s artistic output. From dark, gloomy new-wave anthems to more modern indie-powered bangers, Junodef feels at home in a variety of settings – that’s probably one of their bigger strengths, adapting to the lyrical theme while maintaining a strong identity.

‘Catastrophical’ collects a bunch of singles we have already championed – such as ‘Anemone’ and ‘She Wants To Win’, together with brand new offerings, the likes of ‘When The Day Comes Around’ for instance, which also gets a hypnotising music video. Comparing the record with Junodef’s older material, we can observe their growth and maturity, slowly moving from a guitar-based outfit to a much more universal creative entity, using the full spectrum of modern music to mould an intriguing sonic universe, one that allows the three talents to fully flourish.

The same goes for their lyricism, as Junodef explain: “Where our previous work has been an inward journey, untangling difficult feelings and events, ‘Catastrophical’ is a reflection on how we view and interpret the world around us. Our lyrics are usually a bit subtle or cryptic by default, but collectively these songs tell a story of our huge resentment for this capitalist, individualist and materialist system we live in, and all the oppression, injustices and suffering that stem from it.
