The keen reader might be already familiar with sonic explorer Julian Tran, having featured on our pages recently with the soothing gem ‘Another Day’. Writing about it, we proudly declared: “A creeping sense of infinity will be felt by all parties involved: as if you were floating in gooey and plastic sonic matter, lulling everybody to sleep.” Now, the London-based creative returns with a double single, a record that seems to temporarily leaves vocals behind, focusing instead on an ethereal, poignant and highly magnetising instrumental outlook.
‘FANTASY UNLIMITED: PART II’ is exactly that: a journey into human consciousness, a nuanced representation of Tran’s inner feelings. The release also marks a trilogy of double singles, which configures a rather productive year for the British artist.
‘It’s Held Within’ introduces the record with majestic piano tones, all blending organically with mellow synth lines and gentle textures. The alchemy between orchestral instruments and electronica works very well, pushing the record and the project into ambient and soundtrack territories. The compositional value is extreme, showcasing Julian Tran’s impressive musicianship. ‘Dunes’ focuses on solemn and darker vibes, still containing the same hypnotising force that seems to be championed so greatly by ‘FANTASY UNLIMITED’.
A stunning record.
