If we had to use the word ethereal in a review, it would be this one. When approaching ‘Another Day’, the listening experience is light, almost weightless. A creeping sense of infinity will be felt by all parties involved: as if you were floating in gooey and plastic sonic matter, lulling everybody to sleep. Julian Tran manages to bring those sensations to life, and he does so with soothing and hypnotising songwriting, evocative folk and cinematic tones, and calming and reassuring vocals. In other words, the record is an absolute gem, the kind of track we all have to experience at least once in our lifetime.
‘Another Day’ follows up on Tran’s 2021 solo debut, the album ‘Misery’. We mention a ‘solo debut’: that’s because the French musician – now based in London – moved to the British capital a few years back with his previous band, slowly reaching a point where a new beginning was needed. Now, at only 25 years old, Julian is motivated in showing his true colours, doing so through carefully-crafted, poignant and reflective musical material. You might also know him under the alias Sonic Eater.
Marking a new cycle of artistic offerings, ‘Another Day’, serves as a preface to a larger body of work to be released in March 2023. This single is a three-part exploration of the yearning for adventure and the fear of stagnation. The album artwork for this project was created by multidisciplinary artist Thomas Brett, with all the material written, performed, and produced by Julian.
