Julian Petrin Unveils Chillwave Sonicscape ‘Are We Ok?

It is somewhat complex to describe the sensation you’ll feel while listening to ‘Are We Ok?’. It’s a black hole of aural excitement: gooey, dynamic and timeless sonic matter which mercilessly kidnaps the listeners, transporting them into an alternate universe where they can all float in the air, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of rainbow colours. That sounds about right; Julian Petrin really outdoes himself here. ‘Are We Ok?’ means to be retro, and in part is, but we would argue it actually manages to also be incredibly modern, by incorporating a strong post-modern outlook, something more akin to vaporwave and chillwave. It is an interpretation of the 80s through the mind of a talented artist.

Music-wise, ‘Are We Ok?’ is built over Linn-style drum beats, arpeggiated synths and anthemic leads, keeping the pressure up from the beginning to the end. If you need a source of escapism, Petrin can provide it for you: imagine hearing the track after a long day at work, while you collapse on the couch… what if we were to fall asleep to it? We’d probably dream about unicorns, candies and Wynona Ryder.

Starting in the early 1990s, German-Italian artist and composer Julian Petrin has been steadily building a unique and ever-evolving repertoire of melodic instrumental pieces. Combining elements from jazz, classical impressionism, ambient music, chillwave, and electronica, his music creates bridges between genres to form an eclectic and captivating soundscape. It is no surprise that Petrin is now gaining wider recognition for his unique sound, and his inspiring story of perseverance and passion for music is one that should be shared.
