‘Beyond Provisional’ is the exceptional new album courtesy of North Carolina-based rockers and stalwarts Jphono1, an outfit led by guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist John Harrison. Choosing to mix the record themselves for the first time, ‘Beyond Provisional’ allowed the band to fully explore their creative boundaries – and they didn’t hold back!
‘Time & Space’ gets the album underway and instantly reminds me sonically of Soundgarden’s ‘Blow Up The Outside World’. The instrumentals are hypnotising – and it’s the perfect scene setter for the journey ahead.
‘Magic Here’ is raw and gritty, with an almost shoegazey influence that lends it a hazy and immersive quality, while the instrumental ‘Ramkat’ showcases the act’s ability to craft punchy, riff-laden tunes that hit you like a jolt of electricity.
‘Midnight Moon’ takes things down a notch, offering a sort of prog-rock/grunge hybrid that is simply spellbinding, before ‘All Charades’ returns us to the thunderous psychedelic rock grooves.
‘Goldtop,’ ‘The Eyelids of Smiling Jenny,’ and ‘Listen to the Birds’ make up the rest of ‘Beyond Provisional’ and each track pulsates with its own distinct energy and character. A truly stellar offering from a highly gifted bunch of musicians!
