One of our favourite upcoming artists, Joyce Tratnyek has always managed to distinguish herself from the maze of mainstream-lenient acts. She’s unique, as it should be. Her artistry doesn’t conform to any pre-written rules, instead flourishing in its own stylings. ‘Moon Tattoo’ is Tratnyek’s latest effort, a perhaps mellower episode than usual; in it, the Portland talent focuses on her lyricism, delivering an acoustic piece that’s still drenched in shoegaze energy.
That’s genius: taking a rather simple and poignant song, Joyce transforms it into ethereal goo in the simplest way, supercharging the lyrical meaning with a sonic depiction of itself. As she explains: “It was inspired by the all-too-universal pain of loving someone far away, seeing reminders of them everywhere, and wanting something tangible to remember them by, hence the metaphorical and literal “moon tattoo.”
