I love writing about leftfield music. You see, there’s way more to be said about unique, personal sonic explorations than there is about a commercial pop record. The truth is, when people delve into experimental territories is often because they have something to say. Joshua James Nunn certainly does, taking a break from his recent cinematic endeavours to focus on original material.
‘Quiet Noise’ is the result of such a process, a nuanced and eclectic EP bathing in long soundscapes, glitchy textures and early club influences. The result is an electronic record that always looks to the future, yet is rooted in tradition. ‘Awakening’ opens the dances with a blissful, soothing and poignant stream of vibrant sonic fabric, complemented by evocative female spoken words.
‘Life’ is way more industrial and hard-hitting, as is ‘Melancholy’, introducing a veiled chillwave element and a solid song form. ‘Nostalgia’ closes the EP like it started, lost in a cascade of soundscapes and cathartic sounds. It’s a glorious triumph, and we love this record to bits. Speaking about it, Nunn explains: “This four-track EP is a personal reflection of my introspective journey and exploration of life’s purpose”.
