This is not just another record. This is an art piece. A modern, witty take on modern spoken words and philosophical lyricism. Yet, there’s certainly high musical value in it, with a blend of edgy electronica, abstract textures and playful indie stylings. Behind it all, we find Joshua Idehen, a fierce and brave creative with a long and illustrious history of collaborations and past projects.
Known for bands Benin City and Calabashed, Idehen also boasts collab work with the likes of Daedelus and Metronomy. ‘Mum Does The Washing’ provides a hypnotising listening experience: as the listeners are focused on Joshua’s tongue-in-cheek, delicate spoken word, a universe of sonic joy tends to unfold around them. It’s a triumph, really.
‘Tactics For Survival’ takes the role of focus track, four minutes of indie and electronic dry extravaganza, perfectly matching Idehen’s sharp and poised vocal flow. Delving into the inspiration behind the song, Joshua explains: “I was obsessed with ‘coping’: how different cultures, communities and people dealt with living under lockdown.”
