The keen reader will gladly remember Josh Tavares, Canadian talent with an eclectic view of modern pop. Writing about his previous effort ‘Evil Genius’, we proudly declared: “Gloomy, icy and obscure, a particularly striking offering”. We stand by our words; hailing from Toronto, the young creative seems to have a particularly strong predisposition for material that’s hazy and mysterious, packed with poignancy and emotional energy.
‘Awkward Years’ confirms it all: built over a colossal stack of cinematic percussions and guitar textures, the record is a welcome return to Tavares’ meaningful artistic universe. His vocals crown the track perfectly, never overpowering the sonic environment around it, instead effectively being part of it. This results in a piece of music that’s cathartic and highly nuanced.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Awkward Years’, Josh explains: “It is about moving on from a relationship, whether it be a quick fling, or a long-term relationship, both of which I’ve gone through during the creation of the song. I wanted it to have a cinematic vibe, like something you could hear in a ‘coming-of-age’ Netflix movie.”
