Hitting you with hypnotising energy and unmatched charisma, ‘Fairytales’ is the single the psych community was waiting for. Staying clear from Tame Impala’s punchy retro grooves, Josh Sky tries instead a dreamier and more ethereal direction, successfully delivering an immersive and spacious musical panorama which feels both psychedelic and lo-fi, perhaps even shoegaze-inspired.
It is possible that Sky’s references always were pretty wide, and in fairness to him, the project looks pretty keen and enlightened when it comes to its sonic formula. Hailing from Minneapolis, the young creative teamed up with fellow talents Devin Forness, AJ Debellis and Derek Callender, crafting ‘Fairytales’ – a hazy, misty retro gem – and ‘Friends’ a more spacious and organic jewel. Notably, Sky’s vocals are way poppier than one would expect, with his songwriting and melodies being rather relatable and emotional.
Speaking about the record, Josh explains: “Our latest single “Fairytales” is a culmination and interpretation of what it feels to let go of something you desire more than anything, to live and grow from those losses, but packaged in the form of a cheesy love song that I believe is perfect for the growing indie rock genre.”
