There’s a certain richness in ‘southside thrill ride’. The album itself is rather eclectic and varied, exploring anything from conventional hip-hop to punchy R&B and gritty electro-pop anthems. The only constant is their author, Houston-based American creative Joho. Perfectly at home in emotional pieces, as he is in more uplifting territories, the young artist collects eleven songs delving into personal growth and life’s intricate occurrences, making for a vivid, vibrant record that’s easy to relate to.
Opening with ‘dan marino gran torino’, the Texan voyager introduces us to bouncy, striking rap energy, only to break it up completely in follow-up ‘trust’, a more dancy, poppy offering laced with Joho’s singing vocals. It’s interesting to observe the easiness with which he’s able to do that, switching seamlessly between rapping and singing. He perhaps feels more at home with the latter, but we are sure it’s a work in progress. Elsewhere, ‘santa fe’ closes the album with help from IIRIIS’ ethereal, expansive female vocals.
‘southside thrill ride’ was recorded and produced by Joho himself, alongside contributions from 4D3N. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, he explains: “It delves deep into themes of family, interpersonal relationships, morality, mortality, higher education and self-consciousness.”
