We have been lucky enough to observe John Beckmann shifts style and references many times during the past few years. In essence, he’s not just a music artist; he’s a holistic creative, constantly focusing on a diverse range of themes, some witty and leftfield, others more relatable and friendly. With ‘Meine Liebe’, Beckmann – also known by his moniker Mortal Prophets – dives into the complex and euphoric era of the Weimar Republic, doing so while inspired by an obscure, mysterious vinyl record blending classic opera with new wave and electronica.
This is what Mortal Prophets is all about; being receptive to outside influence, and finding a glimpse of art in hidden corners around the world. ‘Meine Liebe’ is as flashy as its name implies (at least to non-German speakers). A fragmented collection of samples from the aforementioned vinyl paired with the creativity bolstered by Beckmann himself and producer David Sisko.
Curiously, the ‘Meine Liebe’ EP incorporates the same source material in every track, in a constant effort to reach different creative destinations. Mortal Prophets does get there, eventually. Speaking about the record, he explains: “What is real is what can be imagined, this collection of songs captures the glitter and doom of what was the Weimar Period in Germany”.
