Incredibly poignant and nuanced, ‘Isolation’ welcomes the listener with a hypnotising piano riff, slowly building in intensity and emotional energy. Jody Cooper’s mellow vocals crown the piece with charisma and honesty, channelling the inner vulnerability experienced by all of us, at some point in the past few years. The single grows into a fully-fledged, cinematic anthem, exploring indie-pop stylings and folk songwriting.
It works: ‘Isolation’ ends up being a stream of enlightened consciousness, wrapping the listeners into an unexpected catharsis – perhaps an occasion for escapism and acceptance. Cooper is inspired by his personal experience during the pandemic, when facing loneliness and… isolation. From there, he was able to transform it all into a work of art, connecting with fellow human beings with kindness and softness.
Hailing from Germany but with strong British roots, Jody has made this record quite a unique and personal affair. As he explains: “I was looking for two words that would sum up what I felt were the most important feelings during a worldwide crisis such as the pandemic, but also reflect what many of the songs I was writing at the time were about.”.
