Jodi Heights Shares Evocative Record ‘I Took a Swim with Evil’

If we had to describe ‘I Took a Swim with Evil’ with one word only, we’d probably choose ‘elegant’. Built on a truly organic arrangement, the record is incredibly lush and evocative, with American songstress Jodi Heights crowning it with poignant and nuanced vocals. She’s also playing a charming acoustic piano, which works perfectly with the polite, soulful drums and the many vocal harmonies.

Balanced between orchestral flavourings and a modern jazz character, ‘I Took a Swim with Evil’ is certainly a deeply eclectic number. It is the perfect vessel for Heights’ meaningful lyricism, drenched in philosophical values and rather contrasting with the playful and light texture of its overarching sonic livery. Conveniently, the single is also being released in Dolby Atmos, and frankly, we don’t have the infrastructure to enjoy it but we’d love to, especially since the track is so detailed.

Speaking about the inspiration behind it, Jodi explains: “The idea for ‘I Took a Swim with Evil’ came from an unexpected place: an autocorrected text message. A friend had meant to type ‘do you want to swim with me?’, and it changed the last word to ‘evil’ which we thought was hilarious. Then I found myself drawn to it as a writing prompt. Why would evil invite me for a swim, and if I accepted, what would I learn?”
